January has been a fantastic month to start 2018 for Melbourne Airport. With various capacity increases, longer days and rare visitors, there was plenty to see.
The biggest highlights this month revolved around polar air cargo. They operate a single frame, N450PA, that still wears the old livery. Usually they're incredible rare at Melbourne, visiting maybe once or twice a year. Throughout January it has already visited twice and the journey out for it was definitely worth while! Of course, a month hasn't gone by without Polar being delayed until daylight once. There was another instance which occurred towards the start of the video. Unfortunately, the delay didn't land on one of the days N450PA was operating.
Another big highlight in January was Fiji Airways additional flights, FJ932 & FJ933, over peak which marks the first scheduled daylight service of Fiji Airways since 2010. The service has now ended but should be back next summer. The aircraft used on this flight was their sole Boeing 737-700.
Another huge bonus over January was the opportunities that the longer days give spotters to catch aircraft that are usually shrouded by darkness. A few examples of these aircraft are Thai's B777-200, Cobham's BAe-146 and the Sharp Airlines SA227. The longer days also provided fantastic lighting for Latam's 787 and Air Chinas A330-300 which are also usually shrouded by darkness.
January also marked the first visit of the new special livery on the Emirates A380, the Year of Zayed, which has been coming in quite regularly since throughout the month.
A couple of other noteworthy mentions are the Coulson Group C130 fire bomber arriving into Avalon for the fire season. Qantas' 747 that flies between JNB and SYD got diverted due to storms in Sydney which took off quickly after arriving and given the all clear. They also operated the yearly Antarctic flights and this year VH-OEF did the honours, which is the 747 sporting the OneWorld titles. There was also a lot of movement revolving around the SkyTraders A319s. Although they're based at Melbourne, they're very tricky to catch. With a stroke of luck, I was able to catch both of them.
Without further ado, hope you enjoy the best of January at Melbourne Airport!
