When the Gyeongchun Line, a double-tracked railway line connecting Seoul and Chuncheon, opened on December 20, 2010, it replaced the Mugunghwa train that traveled this route for 70 years. Built on the discontinued train line, Gangchon Rail Park is a popular tourist attraction where visitors can pedal along old railroad tracks while taking in the lovely Bukhangang River scenery. The nearest train station is GimYuJeong Station which took us about 2 hours plus to get from Seoul Station. This place is a few stops further from the stop for Nami Island Ferry Terminal.
You can rent either the 2-seater bike for 30,000 won ($38 SGD) or the 4-seater bike for 40,000 won ($50 SGD). When you first get there, you queue up to get onto your rail bike and then the staff gives you some time to practise and get used to the brakes.
The entire rail bike journey takes about 50 minutes where you will ride past villages, scenic areas and through 3 tunnels. The pedalling is not that tiring and anybody should be able to handle it. At the end point, there is a small shop selling drinks and snacks and you get about 20 minutes here. Afterwards, you get on a train which brings you straight to Gangchon Train Station. We got off the train, walked towards the small town and had our lunch.
It was about -10 degrees Celsius when we were there. Our asses were frozen but it was definitely an interesting experience. It would have also been nice to come here in Summer or Spring.
