(9 Feb 2022) A group of journalists covering the Beijing Winter Olympics visited the Great Wall of China on Thursday, in what was the first opportunity for many to step out of the work frenzy around the games and see the country.
Guided by Chinese staff and volunteers, dozens of journalists walked through the 1.5 km (0.9 miles) pass of the Juyongguan Great Wall.
The area where the tour took place was closed to the public for the duration of the tour.
Among the participants was New York Times reporter Daniel Victor, who said it was an experience to be able to come out and see the real China.
"There definitely have been a lot of logistics that you have to figure out in how to cover the Games this time. So it's been, not quite, well, no games are going to be relaxing for journalists to cover. But this one certainly has been an adventure," he said.
The Great Wall was built as a military defense project of successive Chinese empires, with a total length of over 21,000 km (13,000 miles).
