STORYLINE
Hundreds of Iraqi women took to the streets of Baghdad on Monday to mark International Women's Day and demand equal rights for women.
The women, many accompanied by their children, chanted "Long Live Women" and "Yes for equality".
The demonstration marked the drive to improve women's access to training, legal, medical and financial assistance.
The first of nine new women's centres to provide such help opened on Monday in the Mansour neighbourhood of the capital.
The centres will be paid for with a one point four (M) million US dollar grant from the Coalition Provisional Authority and the US Agency for International Development.
They will be implemented by Women for Women International, a Washington-based group.
The centre in Mansour will give women access to tools and training to help them improve their lives.
It has internet access on 11 computers, a library and a research centre.
Women will use the facility to get information from non-governmental agencies to learn vocational skills, business management and leadership training.
US Administrator Paul Bremer said the coalition would seek to open similar centres in other Iraqi provinces.
