I had originally planned to travel into Boston's Castle Island on the 4-th of July to shoot the arrival of the Queen Mary 2. For many years the Cunard Line flagships have visited Boston on the 4-th of July, going back to the Queen Elizabeth 2. ([ Ссылка ])
Unfortunately I was unable to make it into Boston, so the next best thing was to climb the hill in back of my home in Quincy, MA and shoot it from there. The distance to the main ship channel is approx. 7 miles.
Thanks to the excellent video posted by Gary Reed, ([ Ссылка ]) I had purchased the Sony VCL-HGD1758 on eBay and I decided to use it to shoot the QM2's arrival.
The 6:30 AM shooting conditions were not very good. Low sun angle, haze, and the usual atmospheric distortion that is normal for telephoto shots.
The results weren't too bad given the conditions. There is some softness and CA at the vertical edges of the image. I also had to use DNR in post to alleviate some of the atmospheric distortion. This resulted in some softening of the image.
The QM2 will be returning to Boston on Sept. 25-th and I hope to get some better shots of her then.
