Alexandria Orthodontics Showcase:
Severe Overjet correction with single premolar extraction
In his week’s AO showcase our patient presented with the primary concern of a blocked out lower tooth. In addition to the severe lower crowding, the left side bite had a severe class II discrepancy. This means the upper teeth were stepped forward a full tooth size compared to the lower teeth. This bite discrepancy coupled with the lower crowding created a severe overjet.
Overjet and overbite can sometimes be confused. Overjet generally refers to the distance between the upper and lower front teeth, while the overbite refers to the amount of overlap between the front teeth.
By extracting the upper left first premolar and closing the space, the overjet was successfully minimized after 20 months of orthodontic braces treatment. The patient was ecstatic with her smile.
Stay tuned for next week's case of the week.
