Coin is located in the Guadalhorce Valley , about 33 km west of the provincial capital Malaga and about 30 km north of Marbella . Coín is located in a privileged place in the province of Malaga, near the beaches of the Costa del Sol, the provincial capital, the Sierra de las Nieves natural park, as well as having its own natural jewels such as Barranco Blanco, Río Pereila or the pine forests of the Llanos del Nacimiento.
The economy was traditionally agriculture, coexisting with the mining of marble, existing since Roman times,) and ceramics. The latter has been very important and well-known during the 20th century, having its own color style called "Verde Coín". The most relevant ceramic workshop during the last century was the Cumbreras Workshop and today this material of the traditional ceramics of Coín is still working, with more than 300 years old by local artisans. Nowadays, tourism, construction, and the hotel industry have replaced the old industry, and there are still many potters and several quarries from which marble, dolomite, and sand are basically extracted for construction.
