Craig Brown died at the age of 82. He was a well-liked former Scotland boss who led the team to Euro 96 and the World Cup in 1998.
"Craig died peacefully today in University Hospital, Ayr, after a short illness, surrounded by close family members," Brown's family said in a statement.
"The family wants to say how much they appreciate how well the hospital staff took care of them and how many words of support and sympathy they got from friends and coworkers. At this very sad time, the family asks that their privacy be observed while they are grieving."
Aberdeen, the team Brown led from 2010 to 2013, said in a statement, "Everyone at Aberdeen is devastated by the loss of Craig Brown, our beloved former manager, director, and club ambassador. Craig was a good friend to all of us, and we will miss him very much. Our love and prayers go out to his family at this very sad time."
"A true Scotland legend," said a tweet from the official Scotland football team account. "At this sad time, our thoughts are with Craig's family."
Brown, who was born in Glasgow, played for Rangers, Dundee, and Falkirk, but a knee injury cut his playing career short. In 1977, he became a manager for Clyde. Brown worked there as a part-time guide for 10 years while also being a teacher and lecturer. A phone call from Alex Ferguson changed the course of Brown's career.
Then, Ferguson, the manager of Aberdeen, was in charge of Scotland temporarily at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. He asked Brown to join his coaching team. He asked, "How would you like the vacation of a lifetime?" In 2013, Brown remembered. Scotland's adventure in 1986 didn't last long, but Brown stayed on as the new boss Andy Roxburgh's assistant.Brown was also put in charge of Scotland's youth teams. In 1989, he led the under-16 team to the final of the World Championship, and in 1992, he led the under-21 team to the semi-finals of the European Championship. The senior team made it to the finals of the 1990 World Cup and the 1992 Euro, but left early both times. In December 1993, Brown took over as boss from Roxburgh.
