Our brain and nervous system have hard wired mechanisms for generating fear and anxiety, and we have hard wired mechanisms for suppressing our fear and anxiety. It boils down to self generated optic flow which is activated by forward movement and has been shown to suppress the amygdala and to lead to dopamine release (especially when our anxiety is high).
Dr. Huberman discusses how our eyes are designed for us to set our internal state of arousal or calm. His lab’s research is beginning to show how this circuitry holds tremendous potential in the treatment of trauma, circadian biology & understanding the extend to which our vision can impact our internal states & how that might be leveraged in the treatment of mental health & illness!
