Collab with @jburbygo. He did a concept for the background, and it's a big factor of the level + he wanted credit so I figured he might as well be my collab partner.
Vanilla Level Design Contest 14 (also known as VLDC14) is a Super Mario World Central contest where you try to design your best vanilla (Lunar Magic only) level and compete against 88 other entries. VLDC14 follows the footsteps of the last contest where a lot of restrictions in terms of tweaking 'global stuff' has been lifted, so you're allowed to change the first two pages of map16 to create a number of interesting effects. You can also remap global graphics data, which can result in changing graphics that can't normally be changed in a level-to-level basis (like the player sprite or global animations). This itteration allows for Kaizo levels...something that doesn't mean anything to me because I'm boring. So I made a standard: very hard level instead.
So this level heavily uses a brand new feature in the newest Lunar Magic where you can scroll Layer 2, essentially creating different types of auto-scroll levels. I was going to give up on the idea after a bit, but then I started up my first EVER YouTube stream and things just...clicked. @jburbygo sent me an image of a background on Discord, and I was super impressed with it. I recreated it from scratch using Layer 3 vanilla tiles (with the freedom the contest rules allows).
After the first stream ended, I decided to create a new sample-scratch track envoking the theme of a frozen over factory that's in operation. Burb figured out the sample almost immediately, but I'm curious if anybody else can guess where it came from.
The song is called "Fulldec's Freezer ~ Fast Frost Factory."
The 2nd stream was like a couple days before the contest ended, so I pretty much made the 4 remaining parts of the level and called it as soon as I added the goal post. I saved aesthetic work until the day before, and added something.....mildly intriguing at the end. Considering this is called "lap ii" you can probably guess where I got that idea from. The best part is it was totally viable under the rules of VLDC.
Unlike my and @EvilGuy019's VLDC13 stage, I didn't play around with too many map16 page 0/1 manipulations this time. I actually DID want to abuse a mechanic of the goal post originally when I started the level, but LM prevented it from being possible (sadly). It would make for a...mildly ok CLDC or a decent QLDC at best, tho honestly I'll probably just do it in a collab.
