Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Civil Rights activist Ella Josephine Baker (December 13, 1903 – December 13, 1986) was one of the founders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), formed the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and was a mentor to activists such as Diane Nash, Stokely Carmichael, and Bob Moses. Though considered a “behind-the-scenes” organizer, she was truly the spine of the Civil Rights Movement.
“Even if segregation is gone, we will still need to be free; we will still have to see that everyone has a job. Even if we can all vote, if people are still hungry, we will not be free. Singing alone is not enough; we need schools and learning…Remember, we are not fighting for the freedom of the Negro alone, but for the freedom of the human spirit a larger freedom that encompasses all mankind.” – Ella Baker (1964)

The brilliant minds at YouTube have slapped an “age-restriction” label on my mini-documentary of Civil Rights activist Ella Baker. Does the video have nudity? NO! Does the video show extreme violence? NO! Does the video feature foul language? NO! The ONLY reason YouTube doesn’t want anyone 18 or under to view this video is that in a 1964 speech, Ella Baker refers to Blacks as…wait for it…Negroes! Keep in mind this happened in 1964! This is why History MUST be taught in school! Otherwise, people will grow up to be like the folks who run Facebook and YouTube: a special kind of stupid.
