STORYLINE
Clashes in the Greek capital of Athens continued into Wednesday night, as protesters clashed with riot police on the fourth day of riots, sparked by the fatal police shooting of a teenager, 15-year-old Alexandros Griogropoulos, over the weekend.
Demonstrators threw fire bombs at police in the streets near to where the boy was shot as police fought to keep the protests under control.
Wednesday night's clashes topped off day-long protests which turned violent when 10-thousand people gathered in central Syntagma Square, as part of a pre-planned national strike against the conservative government's economic policies.
The national strike shut down schools, public services, hospitals and flights, and increased pressure on the fragile conservative government of Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, still reeling from the country's worst riots in decades.
The clashes escalated into running battles through the city centre, with riot police firing volleys of tear gas at masked youths pelting them with rocks, bottles and blocks of marble smashed from the Athens metro station entrance.
Although strike and demonstrations had been scheduled long before the riots broke out, they have taken on the added form of protest against the government's handling of the riots.
