Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on 24 February, business leader, philanthropist and Phones 4U founder John Caudwell has been speaking out loudly about how the UK and other Western allies should respond.
Earlier this week, as part of urging the UK government to speed up visas for refugees, he offered to personally sponsor a Ukrainian family - in their own two-bedroom home, with all utilities, food and other assistance provided for as long as necessary - and he urged other wealthy individuals to do the same.
On Friday 11 March 2022, John was interviewed about his initiative, and how else he plans to help alleviate the humanitarian crisis, by presenter Storm Huntley on The Jeremy Vine Show on Channel 5.
John said: "The response that’s come through to my social media pages has been amazing. Not so much because the rich are taking it up, which they are, but because just ordinary people, who’ve got not particular wealth and only one spare room in their house are offering that spare room to refugee families. It really really does warm your heart that the British people are taking this on board like this."
