Ever wanted to know how you can tell if a Sow (female pig) is in heat? There are plenty of great resources out there, but I wanted to share something I saw today in case you've never seen it. This answer? Ask the Boar (male pig)! If you are noticing behavior out of the ordinary for your Boar, then this may be the reason.
Most of the information I normally find focuses on the Sow, which is reasonable. But I noticed our male foaming at the mouth excessively, and chewing constantly. Since we have been wondering whether our Sow is pregnant, we've been keeping a closer eye for details, and after seeing the foaming this morning I did some quick research online and several people noted the foaming and chewing behavior of Boars. Adding that to his aggressiveness seems to confirm it, as the only other time the boar has been aggressive was when another mating time was near. Otherwise our Boar is very friendly and allows us to scratch the belly and sometimes even lays down for a belly rub! So the aggressiveness is definitely out of the ordinary.
I hope this helps anyone who's looking for some more answers or experiences from others!
These are a breed of pigs called Ossabaw Island Hog, for reference.

About us:
We moved to a farm property in 2019, and little did we know that about a year and a half later we would be starting a completely new journey. I (Josh) found myself without employment in early 2020, and eventually our hearts turned toward living from the land, something we had talked about but did not have any real ideas for reality! We bought a flock of sheep and a few pigs and added them to our chickens and goats that we started out with a year earlier. Now we are discovering a life of farmer rancher homesteader, whichever it is, and sometimes all of them in one day! We are on an adventure of sorts, wanting it to work financially, and joyful in the prospect of how life can feel very complete in terms of work and family and friends and health.
We hope you'll enjoy the journey along with us, and maybe even be inspired to do it yourself!
