All New York City public school teachers and staff are now required to be vaccinated against the coronavirus. The new policy marks the first vaccination mandate for city workers in the nation's most populous city. This as the FDA fully approved Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine today. Director of St. Joseph's Institute for Autoimmune and Rheumatic Diseases, Dr. Bob Lahita, joins to talk about the significance of that and when he thinks the other vaccines may also get the green light. Dr. Lahita shares whether he thinks this new approval will have an influence on those who were on the fence about the vaccine. The FDA approval is for those 16 and over, as it has warned of an increased risk of heart inflammation from the vaccine in young people, in particular boys ages 12 through 17. Dr. Lahita discusses whether he anticipates approval for the younger age groups anytime soon. Last week it was announced that COVID-19 booster shots will be available and offered this Fall. He talks more about that and who should get the booster. This afternoon, President Biden spoke about Pfizer's FDA approval and also vaccine mandates, calling on companies to require the vaccine. Dr. Lahita explains where he stands on that and also whether herd immunity and natural immunity should factor into things.
