This is a very brief (1-minute) improvised excerpt from Handy's masterpiece blues work. Dr. Clark spontaneously produced this jazzy soundbite immediately following a 3-hour dress rehearsal, one day before his scheduled faculty clarinet recital at Austin Peay State University, in Clarksville, Tennessee. At the age of 12, Clark learned this piece by ear, at the robust urging of his father, Herman Clark (1924-1976), who was a consummate jazz/blues/Dixieland aficionado deluxe! Clark's dad wanted him "to be a clarinetist like Benny Goodman and Pete Fountain". This brief video is dedicated to Stephen Clark's Dad -- a man who truly loved his music, especially jazz!
