⁉️ DID YOU KNOW ⁉️ that in Gibraltar you can walk across an active runway 😱😱 in fact… you have to! If you want to leave Gibraltar on foot, you have to cross the runway to reach the border! 💌 SHARE this post with someone who would love to walk across this runway 😎
Until only March 2023, cars and buses ALSO had to cross the runway to leave Gibraltar, as well as to reach the airport and the supermarket near the border. However, the runway tunnel was finally finished and opened in March so now you can drive in and out of Gibraltar without worrying about whether you’ll be delayed by a plane taking off or landing 🤪 believe me, it’s not fun to realise you’re going to miss your bus because your taxi got stuck as three planes were landing or taking off 😳
It’s definitely a must do if you’re in Gibraltar as it’s a pretty unique experience! However, there are a few super important rules you should be aware of ⚠️
❗️ Do not stop on the runway to take photos
❗️ Do not move off of the marked walkway - definitely don’t try walking DOWN the runway 😳 I’ve seen people try to use it like a catwalk before 😆 you WILL get shouted at over the loudspeaker 🤣
❗️ Do not drop litter! The runway has to be kept clear for the safety of everyone using the airport 🥰
Apparently, Gibraltar Airport is considered the world’s fifth most extreme airport 😱 it’s just one of a very, very few airports in the world to have a public road crossing the runway - from my research the only others is Sumburgh Airport, a small airport serving the Shetland Islands.
