Open defecation has remained one of the major environmental challenges confronting the Fufore community in Adamawa state, Northeast Nigeria as there are not enough toilets to go around.
The community is working with an NGO to embrace cost-effective latrines for all households.
UNICEF estimates that about 50 million Nigerians practice open defecation. Unfortunately, more than 100, 000 children under the age of five die each year from drinking polluted water and poor hygiene.
