Those who are disabled have legal rights and it is against the law for you o be discriminated against because of a disability.
Under the equality act 2010, disabled people are protected to have certain rights when it comes to employment, education, buying and renting properties as well as access to goods and services.
Being disabled can be either a physical or mental impairment. It's considered to be one that has a substantial long-term impact on your life and your ability to perform day-to-day tasks.
It's against the law for your employers to treat you less favourably because you have a disability. Even if you are being treated less favourably because of your connections with someone who is disabled such as a partner or child, you are being discriminated against. This is called discrimination by association.
Employers also have the responsibility to make reasonable adjustments to the workplace to let those with disabilities work and continue to work there.
It is also against the law for them to harass you and make jokes about your disability. Employers must not victimise you should you decide to take legal action against them because of discrimination. Employers are however allowed to discriminate if they have a justifiable reasons such as not hiring someone with severe back pain for a job as a carpet fitter, because they can't carry out the requirement of the role.
