The Schott Perfecto is the definitive example of an American motorcycle jacket and one of the most famous articles of 20th-century men’s fashion.

Of course, in many ways, the Schott Perfecto is in a class of its own. After all, what menswear article is more classically cool than the one made famous by the likes of Marlon Brando, Bruce Springsteen, and Lou Reed.

At present, the Schott Perfecto is more associated with its reputation as a unique and emblematic fashion garment than as a practical article for protection. And you’re just as likely to see it worn by pop stars, musicians, celebrities, and people who have never ridden a motorcycle in their lives as you are to see it worn by actual motorcyclists.

Schott NYC constantly touts the quality of the leather used in their jackets emphasizing that it is drum-dyed, often with pure aniline dye. Meaning, that the leather has been fully immersed and tumbled in a dying vat that is intended to produce a consistent, even color and employ both vegetable and chrome-tanned hides, depending on the jacket.

Most of the Perfecto line is still made in the US in Schott’s New Jersey factory. And a majority of the company’s total jacket production is from the United States.

On their website, Schott offers a surprisingly in-depth pictorial explanation of their manufacturing process.

After first pioneering the use of the zipper, Schott has added some other innovative features to the Perfecto. Not every variety of the Perfecto will have all of these features so be sure to double-check the Overview section for any jacket you’re considering.
