How do you deliver virtual services as a GP during a pandemic?

Before COVID-19, some patients were already waiting eight weeks to see their GP. Former army medic turned GP Dr Dave Triska, and Jacob Haddad, co-founder of a key NHS tech company accuRx, team up to run through some of the unintended benefits of the digital changes forced on the NHS during the pandemic.

Their key message is that a digital tech is a tool - the good and the bad is about how you use it. In the NHS, that means helping doctors and augmenting their care, not replacing them.

Some of the key changes have come with asynchronous messaging between GPs and patients, photo sharing and video consultations. This move away from the typical 10 minute consultation slot leaves the GPs with more time to care for their patients in most need - it isn't possible to properly care for someone receiving palliative care, or who is suicidal, in a 10 minute slot. It can enable patients to receive a copy of all notes from their consultation straight after the meeting. Now, for over half of all current GP interactions in the UK, there will be some kind of digital messaging interaction between the GP and patient as well.

COVID exposed latent needs and accelerated the solutions. Digital tech supporting GPs during the pandemic shows the NHS can adopt technology and use it in a way that's safe and efficient.
