Almost as soon as World War II began, the Kriegsmarine under Admiral Karl Doenitz sought to cut off Great Britain's vital trans-Atlantic lifeline with the United States and starve the British into submission with its deadly U-boats. After years of mounting losses, Admiral Max Horton took charge of Western Approaches and thus Britain's efforts in the Battle of the Atlantic in 1941, and he sought to defeat the U-boat menace once and for all.
