Josephine Kipling, Rudyard Kipling's eldest daughter, died, at the age of six, in 1899 during a family trip to New York. "A light went out in my life, that was never to be rekindled". In 1902 he published the Just So Stories in her memory. In certain of the stories, she was Taffy and he was Tegumai .
