Did you know that inside a beer can there’s a pressure of around 5 atm and this is fabricated from 0.1 mm thick aluminum foil?
Well, these facts were also confirmed during a pressure test performed at ARCA for a completely different purpose.
We needed to water-seal the exhaust of the LAS-1 rocket engine with a 0.02 mm thick aluminum foil disk, which is 5 times less than in the case of a beer can.
The disk bursted at 1.5 atm, which is only 3.33 times less than in the case of a beer can pressure. Also, we should note that that a beer can is a smaller size than the LAS-1 engine exhaust, which definitely confirms that the thin aluminum foil is remarkably capable for pressure containers.
Also, please note how the aluminum foil expanded to take a “natural” shape allowing it to better withstand the internal pressure. A curved surface is well better suited to withstand pressure than a flat one. Therefore we can expect a beer can to be able to withstand an internal pressure of around 8 atm before bursting.
