After many days I have finally finished the main story in Zenless Zone Zero and can now share and archive this new release by Hoyoverse. Hoyoverse of course received worldwide fame for their massive hit Genshin Impact. Zenless Zone Zero hopes to offer a new setting with a different gameplay focus, but still a large roster of loveable characters and fast paced combat.
We play as Belle who works as a Proxy and guides certain mercenaries and other people into a dangerous place called The Hollow where monsters roam and everything is in ruins.
The game starts out small with us helping a trio to retrieve a strongbox, but eventually it becomes a huge and epic tale full of twists and turns involving giant corporations.
The best thing about ZZZ is its setting and beautiful world and characters. Unlike Genshin Impact, this game has a setting that feels more like a Cyberpunk setting mixed with 90's urban vibes of Tokyo. You will be visiting construction sites, coffee shops, arcades and even military bases. These areas are all great to explore and were the real highlight of the game for me.
More so than the core gameplay involving a system where you move through a maze of television screens and have to solve various puzzles. This just was not as engaging and visually it was not that great either. I hope that with future updates the developers will focus more on those amazing areas they created and will offer us more main quests there.
The combat on the other hand does not dissapoint and feels tight and is an absolute visual spectacle. Each character feels distinctly different and its easy to pick out your favorites. Through the main campaign you also get plenty of chances to play with all the characters and try to get a feel for them.
Overall I had a good time with ZZZ and hope to see the city areas more fleshed out and with more things to do for future updates. Until then I will see you all again on The Hollow!
