STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that she does not want to see debt-ridden Greece being forced out of the euro.
She was addressing a gathering of students at Berlin's Neues Museum.
"The euro is not only an economic project, it is also a political project. I will not take part in forcing Greece out of the euro. This would have unforeseeable consequences," Merkel said.
Her words came as Greece's private creditors signalled progress late on Tuesday in a bond-swap deal, but crucial debt negotiations over another round of austerity measures dragged into another day.
Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos delayed a meeting with his coalition parties till Wednesday, staying in talks until late in the night with top bank negotiators as well as with debt inspectors from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.
Merkel said that, according to the information she had, Greece "will not decide to leave the euro".
"I do not want Greece to leave the euro and so the question does not arise," she added.
Merkel was applauded after her speech at the event, which was organised by the BELA (Broader European Leadership Agenda) Foundation - a pan-European initiative which aims to promote leadership potential among young people.
The foundation puts on interactive conferences and debates on key issues facing the EU.
