The first movement (Largo) of the piano work Fantasia Sul Settimo by the great English/Australian composer, Julian Cochran.
Fantasia Sul Settimo comprises three movements, all based upon the 7th note in the scale acting as the gravitational centre. You can observe, for example, during the opening that the 7th note, in acting as the lowest note in the harmony, immediately introduces the exotic tone of the entire work.
Fantasia Sul Settimo is a sister work to the five-part Pegasus' Travels, because both piano cycles have all of their movements derived from a fixed set of seeds. In both works, Cochran expands the concept of the fugue, (1) using numerous subjects instead of two, (2) developing the subjects over greatly varied colours and contexts, and owing to such atmospheric contrasts (3) deriving multiple movements from the same subjects.
