Borgund Stave Church is a unique example of impressive medieval architecture. Built around 1180 and is dedicated to the Apostle Andrew. The church is exceptionally well preserved and is one of the most distinctive stave churches in Norway. Some of the finest features are the lavishly carved portals and the roof carvings of dragons's heads. Borgund Stave Church was built between 1180 and 1250 AD with later additions and restorations. Vertical wooden boards or staves form their walls, hence the name “stave church.” Borgund Stave Church was purchased in 1877 by the National Trust of Norway thereby saving it from demolition.
