Louise Wilkins-Haug, MD, PhD, Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (High-Risk Obstetrics) at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), describes research to improve our understanding and care of patients with high-risk pregnancies.
Improving High-risk Pregnancy Outcomes – several physician-researchers are studying how to improve outcomes for women with high-risk pregnancies, including Katherine Economy, MD, MPH, who is looking at women with repaired cardiac anomalies, Nicole Smith, MD, who is looking at interventions for women with depression, and Chloe Zera, MD, MPH, who is evaluating optimal management of women with gestational diabetes. Daniela Carusi, MD, MSc, is also studying risk factors for placenta accreta and Julian Robinson, MD, is collaborating with researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital to determine whether advanced imaging of the placenta can predict pregnancy outcomes.
Prenatal Diagnosis and Maternal Health – As prenatal diagnostic techniques are become more sensitive, BWH researchers are studying what the tests can reveal about the health of both the mother and baby. Recently, MFM specialists from BWH contributed cases to a study which found that newer, more sensitive prenatal diagnostic testing was able to identify cancers within the mother during pregnancy.
LIFECODES Biobank – Thomas McElrath, MD, PhD, and David Cantonwine, PhD, are leading a multi-year study to look at the relationship between pregnancy outcomes and environmental exposure.
