The Minimalist's Guide to Networking (for Business) - I have a feeling that this is going to be controversial to some and a complete relief to others.

Ok, deep breath, here we go.



Networking for business is a complete waste of time.



You're thinking it, and I said it.



And I'm not the only one. According to a Harvard Business Review article, 99% of any networking event is a waste of time.



I wonder if the 1% that is not a waste of time is even worth trying to figure out. Not sure.



So, as a minimalist business, can you take respite knowing that you can say no to networking?



Yes. Here's why.



It's the people.



Networking is generally full of "takers."



Take a moment and think about the last networking event you went to or the last Zoom networking meeting you were on. Think about the people. How many were there to "give," and how many were there to "take?"



I bet that most or all were there to take.



That's not a suitable environment for you to spend time in, especially if you show up to give.



Groups like that are going to siphon out all of your energy quickly. Leaving you feeling empty and unbalanced.



Networking is full of people trying to sell.



Look, we all want to grow our businesses, right?



But how many times have you been to a networking meeting, and you purposely avoid people who you know are there only to try to sell you their latest "great thing?"



It's uncomfortable at best and predatory more often.



Again, if you are looking for a fulfilling business and life, these are not the people you want to be around.



The people who use networking to "build their list."



Ever see someone who shows up at a networking event, in person or virtual, and collects the names and contact information of as many people as possible?



And then they add everyone to their marketing list, and you get endless emails with them pitching their products?



Full disclosure, I love email marketing, and even more, I love sending educational emails to my list (if you are on that list, thank you!), but I think it's bad form to randomly show up somewhere and start marketing to everyone in the room.



There are hundreds of more ethical ways to build a list than scraping a networking event.



So what should you do?



Hard talk time. Take a good look. Are you wasting a ton of time in networking meetings that are just not helping you build your business?



Here's what to do. Reallocate that time.



If you spend an hour a few times a week in networking, start to cut back and replace that time, expanding your brand.



Think of it this way. You could sit for an hour with 25 people who are not listening to a word you say. Or you could spend that hour making an educational video for YouTube that thousands of people will see.



That's a better use of time.



Here's the bottom line.



It’s true.



Replacing networking with brand-expanding activities will contribute more to the growth of your business than you can imagine.



Just not in the way you are used to.



And it takes time and determination to get it done and do it right.

But once you start, you'll see that it can profoundly help your business.
