This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Alanna shares how she developed her mission to bring PolishedGirlz to life and what drove her to push past the many challenges she faced as a young adult. She also talks about her new mission to give young ladies the opportunities to improve the quality of life, build invaluable leadership skills, and provide opportunities for community service. Her message to them is, “When you hear ‘no,’ think ‘not now.’
Born in 2000, Alanna truly is a new millennium girl. At the age of 10, she wanted to combine her love of drawing and nail design with her desire to bring sparkle to the lives of girls with special needs or frequent hospitalizations. Add a mission of hand washing, infection reduction and a few like-minded friends and “PolishedGirlz” was born. To date, PolishedGirlz have hosted Manicure Parties nationwide, serving over 10,000 clients.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
