At his worst, recovering heroin addict Clay Mosher told Cronkite News he “was outside with a needle in my arm, sleeping in a box behind some building.”
Addicted to heroin at 16, Mosher has remained in drug rehabilitation at the Phoenix Rescue Mission since he appeared earlier this year in the statewide broadcast of “Hooked: Tracking Heroin’s Hold on Arizona.” Sober now for eight months, he says he is motivated to stay clean, though he admits, “I’ll have to live with this the rest of my life.”
“It has such a hold on you when you’re in addiction. I think the longer that you're clean, it will be easier to deal with,” he said. “You’re just a bad decision away from relapsing.”
Mosher, 22, said he relies on his faith and work at the mission to stay busy.
“I believe God has pulled me out of that life, has given me a new life,” he said. “I no longer have to be a slave and in bondage to addiction."
