I did a recent Q&A session within my Facebook community where I got a question about a mother’s son who is answering every question with no. When a child says no, it’s quick to think that the child is not listening. However, there could be several other reasons why a child is constantly saying no. The child could not be understanding the difference between yes and no, or the child doesn’t fully understand the question being asked.

In those cases where the child is not behaving, and you need to get your child to listen, we need to think about whether we are reinforcing the behavior. It’s always important to look at the demands and reinforcements that we’re putting on the child. Handling resistance in children can be improved by simply making transitions easier. For example, telling a child to stop playing at the playground and come inside to do work, probably isn’t going to end well. In today’s video blog, I talk a little bit more about this concept and what you can do instead to handle resistant behavior.
