Request for information (RFI)
This method is intended to help you collect as much information from you vendors as possible.
This is especially the case if you have less knowledge of that particular market.
So you send a request for information document and the vendor gives you the information you need about what they do.
RFP request for proposal
This document asks vendors to prepare solutions to given business problems. What you are doing is asking the supplier to give you a proposal about how they can solve a problem.
For instance if you need a CRM you tell that supplier what you need and they send you a proposal detailing how they can create on for you.
In fact this is what normally follow RFI – rarely would a business go from RFI to RFQ

This is an opportunity for suppliers to competitively cost the chosen solution
