Roger Federer, the No. 2 seed, will face No. 14 Marin Cilic in Saturday’s semifinals
For the better part of two hours and four sets at Arthur Ashe Stadium Thursday night, he kept at his tennis highwire act, an angular interloper in neon green. He leaped and lunged, twisted and twirled, bent and bashed. It all had Gael Monfils, a 28-year-old Frenchman, at the precipice of the unthinkable, the greatest victory of his career, until it all came undone by the implacable will and skill of Roger Federer, and a slew of horribly timed double faults.
The 6-4, 177-pound Monfils, the No. 20 seed, had two match points in the fourth set, and an abundance of other opportunities to defeat Federer, winner of 17 Grand Slams, five of them right here, and move into his first Open semifinal.
