Voyager 1 is a space probe launched by NASA in 1977 with the primary mission of studying the outer Solar System and beyond. It is currently the farthest man-made object from Earth and has left our Solar System and entered interstellar space.
Voyager 1 is equipped with a number of scientific instruments to collect data about its surroundings, such as a plasma instrument to measure charged particles, a magnetometer to measure the strength and direction of magnetic fields, and a cosmic ray instrument to measure high-energy particles.
To transmit this data back to Earth, Voyager 1 uses a low-gain antenna for basic communications with Earth and a high-gain antenna for high-speed data transmission. The high-gain antenna is about 12 feet (3.7 meters) in diameter and requires precise pointing towards Earth.
The data transmitted by Voyager 1 is sent in the form of radio waves, which travel at the speed of light. However, due to the vast distances involved, it takes a significant amount of time for the signals to reach Earth. Currently, it takes over 21 hours for the signals to travel from Voyager 1 to Earth.
Despite the challenges of communicating with a spacecraft so far away, NASA engineers have been able to successfully maintain communication with Voyager 1 for over 40 years.
