Maria Wodzińska was a daughter of Count Wincenty Wodziński and Countess Teresa Wodzińska, of the Jastrzębiec coat of arms.
When the Wodziński family moved to Dresden, in September 1835 Chopin visited them there, returning from a meeting with his parents in Karlsbad. Many times, Chopin met with the Wodziński family at their house at Rampiersche Strasse, where he was often asked to play something. They walked, dined in restaurants, Chopin entertained everyone with stories about his successes in Paris. Apparently, Maria touched his heart. On September 22, Chopin inserts the first three bars of the Nocturne in E flat major from Op. 9; on the other side of paper he sketches the words "soyer heureuse", and two days later he dedicates to her the manuscript of the Waltz in A flat major (which was, after Chopin's death, called Waltz in A-flat major, Op. 69, No. 1).
During the reunion in July-August 1836 in Marienbad and Dresden, 9 IX on "the gray hour" Chopin proposed to 17-year-old Maria and was (at the request of her mother secretly) admitted for a trial period, under the condition of taking care of his health. Frederic then wrote the song Ring to the words of S. Witwicki in the album of Maria, and two etudes, Op. 25 (A-flat major and F-minor), while Maria painted the composer, creating what Tad Szulc called "one of the best portraits of Chopin extant—after that by Delacroix—with the composer looking relaxed, pensive, and at peace".
The Wodziński family returned to Warsaw, where they met several times with Frederic's parents, but the topic of the planned marriage was omitted. For next months Maria and Frederic were letter fiances, correspondent with each other without a great feeling. Chopin was very reserved in expressing feelings, furthermore the situation was also aggravated by the fact that Maria's father did not accept this relationship. Frederic returned to Paris, where he met George Sand and Delfina Potocka, which reached Wodzinski's ears. As a result, under the pretext of the artist's ill health, the subject of engagement was ended. Disappointed Frederic tied up all the letters from Wodziński and signed "my poverty/poor".
What is worth highlighting that Chopin's works from op. 66 to op. 74, despite later opus numbers, come from his earlier years. Chopin did not consider them successful enough to publish and ordered them to be burned after his death; fortunately - Julian Fontana objected to the composer's will.
