Visit Gulangyu Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site five minutes from Xiamen, on a thrilling ferry ride. About ten million people visit this two-square-kilometer island for its history and culture. Gulangyu is peaceful despite its popularity because there are no vehicles or motorbikes, however electric buggies are available for local transportation.
Gulangyu's rich history began as a commercial harbor after the 1842 Treaty of Nanking ended the First Opium War. After Xiamen, Guangzhou, Fujian, and Shanghai opened to Western trade, Gulangyu became a lively enclave for British expats and later housed consulates from up to 13 countries. The island's Victorian architecture recalls its cosmopolitan past.
Chinese uprisings in the 18th and 19th centuries and World War II occupation by Japanese forces made the island a strategic military location until the war's end. This historical richness makes the island alluring and worth exploring.
Follow the island's twisting routes, which defy a grid system, to discover new things at every turn. The former American consulate adds to the island's diplomatic history. Restricting motorized vehicles keeps Gulangyu calm for inhabitants and tourists.
Music aficionados appreciate Gulangyu, which has a Piano Museum and an Organ Museum and is known as "Piano Island." These museums in gorgeous gardens feature an outstanding collection of magnificent pianos, demonstrating the island's musical heritage.
The island's historical grandeur is reflected in its magnificent mansions erected by foreign businesspeople, many of which have been turned into luxury hotels and guesthouses. Sunbathing is rare on the island's rear beaches, although they're beautiful.
Gulangyu is a must-see for its history, architecture, and culture. This tranquil island encourages visitors to journey back in time while experiencing its natural beauty and musical tradition within a stone's throw from Xiamen.
Although the previous day, i had very little knowledge of this beautiful island off the coast of Xiamen, i took a walk around and enjoyed the scenery and soaked up all the history.
