When Oh Wonder was a one-song-a-month songwriting project in 2014, this was the first track of theirs I discovered, and I instantly loved it. Every month when they released something new it was like an event for me, and their self-titled first album basically lives in my car stereo permanently. I have been meaning to try and adapt one of their songs from that first album for a long time, but honestly I couldn't decide which one to play (what a hardship to have too many favourite songs on one album...!). In the end, I came back to this one - the opportunities for effects in trying to recreate the percussion parts, just seemed like the kind of challenge I wanted this month. I am so pleased particularly with the screwdriver pitch bend - this is a well-established extended technique in the modern classical harp repertoire but I positively leapt for joy at having the chance to apply it to a song like this.
Oh, and in case you were wondering about my hair, I did dye it just because I wanted to before considering my video this month, but then I had the idea of doing this song and just thought... well that's totally appropriate!
This song has about fifteen separate parts, which I recorded individually and sequenced in Cubase for this video - between arranging and recording, sequencing the audio and trying to present this in video form, it has been a technical challenge on all fronts! And I really hope you like it.
