Byland Abbey in North Yorkshire was founded in 1135 and quickly became one of the most magnificent monasteries in England. Described in the fourteenth century as 'one of the three shining lights of the North', this romantic historical place is a stunning example of early English Gothic architecture.
Byland Abbey makes for a stunning backdrop to a picnic and is a beautiful place to visit for a bit of peace and reflection. Today, the Abbey is a scheduled ancient monument and has grade 1 listed status.
Byland Abbey is absolutely free to enter and there is a small car park directly opposite.
