TODAYSNETNEWS:01 March 2011 -- UNTV: United Nations, New York -- The General Assembly today (1 March) suspended Libyan membership of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council (HRC) because of President Muammar Al-Qadhafi's violent repression of peaceful protesters demanding his ouster.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed the Assembly before the result of the vote was announced and welcomed the recommendation of the HRC to suspend Libya's membership so long as the violence continues.
Ban said that "the world has spoken with one voice" demanding "an immediate end to the violence against civilians and full respect for their fundamental human rights."
The Secretary-General said that it is the international community's "collective duty to stand for human rights, social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom."
He also warned against "outside interference" and said that "it is imperative that the international community recognize that change must come from within."
After the vote, United States (US) Ambassador Susan E. Rice said that the General Assembly had "come together to speak with one voice to Libya's unrepentant rulers."
She added that "when the only way a leader can cling to power is by grossly and systematically violation his own people's human rights, he has lost any legitimacy to rule" and said that "he must go and he must go now."
Today's vote by the 192-member Assembly follows a request from the Geneva-based 47-member HRC itself last Friday (25 Feb) that it suspends Libya.
The vote was the latest measure taken by the UN. Over the weekend, the Security Council imposed sanctions on Qadhafi's regime and requested that the International Criminal Court investigate it for possible crimes against humanity.
