What Can DNA Testing Tell You About Your Health and Fitness?
Something really exciting has happened to me and I have been given the opportunity to give away one of these kits to one of you in a contest. I’ll be giving you all the details of the contest at the end of the video.
I’ve known about this for a little while but it has finally arrived at my door so we can talk about it.
TellmeGen is a genetic testing lab and they have sent me their kit. So I can have my complete genetic profile done as well as offer a free genetic testing kit to one of my subscribers!
Often when we think of genetic testing we think of ancestry and while this test will provide me with this information. There are a lot of other indicators that they provide that we could use to benefit our own health and fitness.

On the more serious side we can find out our genetic predisposition to various diseases. For example; I have often wondered if I might one day suffer from Parkinson's just as my Father does. There is some evidence to suggest regular exercise can help to delay the effects of Parkinson's as well as many other diseases.
When it comes to fitness doing one of these genetic tests can give us insight into our ability to recover from training as some people experience muscle damage easier than others and some have a genetic ability to recover much faster from a hard training session. This information could prove very useful in program design.
Now I do both sprinting and medium distance running. Sprinting uses type 2 or fast twitch muscle fibres and medium distance running uses primarily type 1 or slow twitch muscle fibres. The kind of muscle fibres we predominantly have is determined by genetics. This test might be able to help me decide which type of running I should be focusing on.
Aging is another area that I am interested in seeing my results. There are a few genetic indicators that they are going to look at but the one that interests me the most is my Telomeres. I did a video a little over a year ago on how exercise helps to protect our Telomere length as once these become short we become more susceptible to certain diseases and our biological age decreases. I will leave a link to that video at the end so you can check it out right after you do whats needed in order to enter the contest for your own free genetic testing kit.
The process for ordering your own genetic kit and getting the results is pretty simple. You can order your kit through Amazon or if you win the contest they will just ship it to you directly. Once you receive the kit the first thing you do is register it online and create a user account. And remember to copy the serial number from the sample collection tube to the appropriate place on your account.
Then just fill the tube with saliva. Yea, you gotta spit, a lot, until you fill to the mark. When you do this you have to make sure you haven’t eaten, drank, smoked or chewed gum at least for at least a half hour prior.
After this just put the sample in the bag provided and take it to the nearest post office. In a few weeks they will let you know your results are in and you can log into your account to access them.
So for the contest what I need you to do is like the video and If you are not a subscriber you will need to subscribe. Then leave a comment on the video. It would be great to hear what you would be interested in finding out from one of these tests and I will pick the winner in the follow up video when we go over my test results. In a few weeks. But until then keep working out while having fun.
