Presenting the brand-new 2025 Ford Mustang GTD, a unique release that brings the track-honed magic of the GT3 race car to the streets. This limited-edition gem boasts advanced features like adaptive suspension and dynamic aerodynamics, which aren't allowed in racing competitions. Anticipated to hit the market in late 2024 or early 2025, it will come with a starting price around $300,000. However, potential buyers will need to apply for the privilege of owning one, following a process similar to that of the Ford GT.
Contrary to speculations, the Mustang GTD doesn't have an engine in the middle. Instead, it's equipped with a powerful 5.2-liter V8 positioned in the front. While the exact power output hasn't been confirmed yet, Ford is aiming for more than 800 horsepower, making it the most powerful Mustang ever built. The engine can rev beyond 7,500 rpm, and it's paired with a titanium exhaust system featuring active valves.
The Mustang GTD boasts a rear-based transmission setup, contributing to a nearly equal weight distribution between the front and rear. It employs an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and a carbon fiber driveshaft transfers the engine's power to the rear transmission.
The car offers a Variable Traction Control system in its Track Mode, allowing drivers to customize engine power and traction control for their preferences on a circuit.
The GTD's ride quality is managed by a semi-active suspension system, which can adapt the spring rates and ride height. This is made possible with adaptive spool valve dampers. In Track Mode, the car's height lowers by 1.575 inches (40 millimeters).
The front suspension setup follows a short-long arm design. The trunk no longer offers storage due to components like pushrods, hydraulic controls, and the rear transmission system occupying that space. Air vents are strategically placed to cool these components.
The Mustang rides on front tires that are 12.8 inches (325 mm) wide, while the rear tires are 13.58 inches (345 mm) wide. The standard wheels are 20-inch forged aluminum, with an optional set of forged magnesium wheels available, resembling the design used in the GT3 race car. The car also features Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes as standard.
Carbon fiber is a key player in the GTD's construction, contributing to weight reduction. Carbon fiber is used for various parts, including the front splitter, hood, fenders, door sills, roof, trunk lid, and rear diffuser. Additional carbon fiber options are available for the front and rear fascias, along with an aerodynamics package that includes hydraulically controlled front flaps, a carbon-fiber underbody tray, and an active rear wing.
Buyers lucky enough to secure a GTD can choose from a wide range of colors, including custom shades provided by the customer.
Inside the GTD's cabin, a blend of materials awaits, including Miko suede, leather, and carbon fiber accents. Recaro seats offer comfort, but the rear bench has been omitted. An optional package introduces 3D-printed titanium elements for paddle shifters, the rotary dial shifter, and a serial number plate, all crafted from retired Lockheed Martin F-22 titanium parts.
The final assembly of the Mustang GTD will be overseen by Multimatic. The car bodies will come from Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant, while the powerful supercharged V8 engine will be sourced from the Dearborn Engine Plant.
