STORYLINE:
Saint Petersburg, Russia''s second largest city, commemorated on Thursday the 70th anniversary of the start of an 872-day siege of the city during the Second World War.
Nearly a (m) million people died of hunger and bombings in the city, or in hostilities while defending its outskirts from German attack.
Residents of Saint Petersburg, then called Leningrad, had to content themselves with daily food rations of no more than 250 grammes of poor quality bread during the deadly 29-month-long Nazi siege.
Lidia Khodchenkova was an 11-year-old child when the siege started. She will be 80 years old in November.
Her memories of the siege are still vivid and she was invited by her former school to share them with current students.
During the siege, the school was used as emergency hospital.
"It was very scary when the winter of 1941 started. I had some problems with my neck, and it was very hard to turn my head, and for a long time I was not well. I was very afraid, especially when the air raid warning went off," she said.
Public loudspeakers in Saint Petersburg, along with radio and television stations, on Thursday morning broadcast roaring air-raid warnings and sounds of a metronome.
