Japan and Indonesia have agreed to boost maritime cooperation amid the ongoing disputes surrounding the South China Sea.
The agreement came during talks on Sunday between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Bogor, a city some 50 kilometers south of Jakarta.
Both Japan and Indonesia are worried about China's increasing military presence in the disputed waters.
Abe stressed the importance of solving the dispute peacefully as the issue is directly related to regional stability.
The two leaders also agreed to seek further economic opportunities such as a major railway project and the development of remote islands in Indonesia.
