Welcome to the mixolydian pentatonic scale (Hindu pentatonic). Taken from my Instagram feed, here's a guitar lesson breaking down one of the coolest-sounding pentatonic scales.
Songs that appear in my Spotify playlists often lead me down explorations into different sounds. 'All I Really Want' by Alanis Morissette reminded me of the sound of this mixolydian pentatonic scale, probably most famously heard in The Beatles' 'Within You Without You' from "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".
George Harrison was famously inspired by Indian music, and this scale gives that Indian feel. Indeed, the scale is also known as the 'Hindu' Pentatonic scale.
The A Mixolydian Pentatonic contains the notes of A C# D E and G. These are the notes of a dominant 7th chord (A C# E and G) with an added 4th (D). The only difference between the Mixolydian pentatonic and the minor pentatonic scale is tthe major 3rd (3) in the mixolydian pentatonic scale as opposed to the minor 3rd (b3) of the minor pentatonic.
The formula for this ‘Hindu’ pentatonic scale is 1 3 4 5 b7.
