After buying the Craftsman ratcheting screwdriver*, I found that the bit shaft would not separate so that it could fit in the case that it comes with.

It turns out that they added a retainer ring that prevents the shaft from separating.

After pulling apart the handle and removing the retainer ring, everything now works as intended.
