The Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge is Georgia's oldest - and arguably longest - historic covered bridge. Located in the Imlac community near Woodbury about 12-miles north of charming Warm Springs, the more than 180-year-old covered bridge was designed and built by noted 19th century engineer and bridge builder, engineer, contractor, and designer, Horace King.
King was born into slavery in South Carolina and either purchased his freedom or was set free. The Alabama Legislature later enacted a special law that gave him additional freedom to travel at will across the South so he could work on his construction projects.
One of the those projects was the Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge, which was built in around 1840. Including its approach spans, it is the longest wooden bridge in Georgia. It is also the last of King's architecture still standing in the state.
