Now that I've spent almost half my life as an Ex-Muslim, I find it so fascinating (and troubling) how the same Islamic story that I found moving and inspiring as a child can be deeply upsetting and downright horrifying as an adult.
The same can be said about my perception of Muhammad: who is the real Muhammad? The merciful, generous and selfless man I learned about as a child? The barbaric, misogynistic and self-serving man I learned about as an adult? A little bit of both, perhaps? A human in the end, but a role model we should all emulate? Not so sure about that.
As a case study of sorts, in this video, I examine the Banu Qurayza incident from Islam's early history. Most Muslims educated in an Islamic school should know about the story and the common apologist defense of what happened to the Jewish Banu Qurayza tribesmen.
Looking at this story today, all I'm left with are questions and doubts about how the violence and cruelty of this incident can fit into what so many Muslims believe Islam to be: a religion of peace and tolerance? But of course, let me know what you think!
