Before Dr. Melvatha Chee pursued a master's and later a PhD in linguistics, she learned that a Navajo language program didn't even exist at the University of New Mexico's linguistics department. Today she is one of two instructors at the university who teach students the fundamentals of Dine' bizaad. It's a notoriously difficult language to learn, and while a grammatical breakdown of Dine' bizaad may be an important key to learning, the DNA of the language is rooted in something even more essential than parts of speech. Class is about to begin: Join me as we learn how the teachings of Melvatha's father have shaped how she approaches teaching, and why she wants to shake up the field of linguistics to create a space for a language rooted in a culture thousands of years old.
